The Fresh Prince

“Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down.” For a young Will Smith, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was the show that turned his acting career upside down. He went from young and relatively unknown actor to a star thrown into the spotlight. Many childhood actors have this experience. However, soon after their show ends they become unknown once again. Will Smith was different. He seized this opportunity and morphed it into one of the greatest acting careers Hollywood has ever seen.

At a young age Will Smith played the comedic role of a young teen sent from the streets of Philadelphia to live with his aunt and uncle in the luxury of Bel-Air. Not only is Will a comedic genius in this show, but he shows that serious and emotional acting is also within his arsenal.

Nevertheless, his best work lies in his movies. Smith’s first major acting role came in 1995 with the production of Bad Boys. Here Smith showed off his ability to play a ladies man detective who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. While Smith still incorporates comedy like that found in the Fresh Prince, he takes the seriousness of his role in this movie to a whole other level. In doing this, Smith was projected into his next movie only one year later.

Independence Day was perhaps one of Smith’s greatest roles. Here he plays a fighter pilot determined to save the world whenever aliens come to inhabit the Earth. Smith’s ability to interact with inanimate objects is the real gem in this movie. Through his acting, Smith enables the aliens to truly come to life.

Following this role it seemed as if aliens were his calling. He would go on to co-star in 3 Men in Black movies with Tommy Lee Jones. Here Smith shows off his ability to save the world again using secret weapons and the disguise of all blacked out attire.

Smith would then go on to star in romantic comedies like Hitch. After that he was cast into a drunken super hero role as Hancock. So, by this point Smith has been everything from a teen living in Bel-Air to an alien world saver, and now a super hero. There is seemingly no role that this man can’t do!

Recently, Smith has starred in a documentary called Concussion. The best part of this movie is that Smith is able to create Nigerian accent that seems totally authentic. The ability to create entirely new ways of speaking just for a movie is incredible!

One other unique thing about Smith is that he was also a successful music artist. He produced hits like Miami and Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It. These hits helped to progress his career even further.

Overall, there is nobody who can act like Will Smith. His movies have produced some of the largest box office sales and will hopefully continue for years to come.

  1. When I saw that this post was about The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, I knew I had to read it. I completely agree with you, Will Smith is obscenely talented and I love his movies. It would be an interesting follow up to see what else came of Will Smith's stepping stool to fame; for example, where is Carlton now? I look forward to reading more!
